Residence Permit for Foreigners in Albania
September 25, 2026 · 6 min read
Albania is an increasingly popular place for foreigners to live, whether for work, family, retirement or investment. Understanding how residence permits work helps you plan your move with confidence. Here is an overview. Because rules can change, always confirm current details with the authorities or a local expert.
Who Is Eligible
Foreign nationals who want to stay in Albania beyond the tourist visa-free period can apply for a residence permit if they meet the requirements for one of the recognised categories, such as work, family, study, investment or retirement.
The Main Categories
Common permit categories include employment, family reunification with a resident or citizen, study, investment, and residence for those with sufficient means such as retirees. Each has its own conditions and documents.
How Long You Can Stay
Residence permits are issued for a set period and then renewed. After several years of continuous legal residence, you may become eligible for long-term or permanent residency, giving you greater stability.
What a Permit Lets You Do
A residence permit allows you to live legally in Albania for its validity. Depending on the type, it may also allow you to work, run a business or bring family members. Confirm what your specific permit covers.
Keeping Your Status
To maintain your status, renew the permit before it expires, keep your documents in order, register your address and meet any conditions attached to your category.
Tips
- Choose the permit category that fits your situation.
- Meet and document the requirements carefully.
- Renew before expiry to keep continuous residence.
- Confirm current rules before applying.
