5 Days in Albania: The Ultimate Itinerary

September 24, 2026 · 5 min read

Five days is the sweet spot for a first trip to Albania. It gives you time to enjoy the lively capital, a historic UNESCO town, and the turquoise beaches of the south without rushing. This route runs from Tirana down to the Riviera and back through the mountains, taking in the country's greatest highlights along the way.

Day 1: Tirana, the Capital

Ease in with a day in Tirana. See Skanderbeg Square, dive into recent history at Bunk'Art, and ride the Dajti Ekspres cable car for views over the city. Spend the evening among the cafes and restaurants of the Blloku district, where the food is fresh and the prices are kind.

Day 2: Berat, the City of a Thousand Windows

Drive to Berat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site about two hours south. Wander the white Ottoman houses of the Mangalem quarter, climb to the living castle, and enjoy the views over the river. Berat is wine country, so linger over dinner with a local glass before an easy night's rest.

Day 3: To the Albanian Riviera

Today you reach the coast. The drive south through the Llogara Pass is spectacular, dropping from pine forests to the shimmering Ionian Sea. Base yourself around Himara or Sarandë, stretch your legs on the beach, and enjoy fresh seafood by the water as the sun goes down.

Day 4: Ksamil, Butrint and the Beaches

Spend a full day on the Riviera's best. Ksamil is famous for its small islands and clear, shallow water, perfect for a lazy beach day and a swim. Just south, the ancient city of Butrint, another UNESCO site, sits among lagoons and greenery, with Greek and Roman ruins to explore. It is an easy, rewarding mix of sea and history.

Day 5: Gjirokastër and the Blue Eye

On the way back north, stop at the Blue Eye, a mesmerising natural spring of deep blue water, then continue to Gjirokastër, a UNESCO town of stone houses climbing to a mighty castle. Wander the old bazaar, enjoy a final Albanian meal, and head onward with a camera full of memories.

Practical Tips

A rental car makes this route effortless and lets you stop at viewpoints along the way. Distances are moderate, so start drives early and keep the pace relaxed. Carry some cash in Albanian lek for beaches and small towns, and pack both swimwear and comfortable shoes for the ruins and castles.
