10 Days in Albania: The Grand Tour Itinerary

September 24, 2026 · 7 min read

Ten days in Albania is a real treat. It is enough time to slow down and see the whole country, from the soaring peaks of the north to the golden beaches of the south, with historic towns, mountain lakes and Roman ruins woven in between. Here is a rich, well paced grand tour that leaves room to relax as well as explore.

Day 1: Tirana

Begin in the colourful capital. Explore Skanderbeg Square, learn about recent history at Bunk'Art, ride the Dajti Ekspres cable car for panoramic views, and spend the evening among the cafes and restaurants of the Blloku district.

Day 2: Krujë and Shkodra

Head north, stopping at Krujë, a hilltop town with a castle, a national hero museum and a charming old bazaar. Continue to Shkodra, one of Albania's oldest cities, for Rozafa Castle and a relaxed evening by the lake.

Day 3: Theth, the Albanian Alps

Drive into the mountains to Theth, a beautiful stone village surrounded by dramatic peaks. Walk to the Grunas waterfall, visit the historic church, and enjoy hearty home-cooked food in a family guesthouse.

Day 4: The Theth to Valbona Hike

Lace up for one of Europe's finest day hikes, the trail from Theth to Valbona over a high mountain pass. The views are breathtaking, and simple cafes along the way keep you fuelled. Rest the night in the peaceful Valbona Valley.

Day 5: The Komani Lake Ferry

Take the famous ferry across Komani Lake, where steep green cliffs plunge into emerald water in scenery often compared to the fjords. It is a slow, spectacular journey back toward central Albania.

Day 6: Berat, the City of a Thousand Windows

Visit Berat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of white Ottoman houses climbing the hillsides. Explore the Mangalem quarter, climb to the living castle, and enjoy a glass of local wine with dinner.

Day 7: Gjirokastër and the Blue Eye

Continue south to Gjirokastër, another UNESCO town of stone houses and a mighty castle, with a lovely old bazaar. On the way, stop at the Blue Eye, a mesmerising spring of deep blue water.

Day 8: Sarandë and Butrint

Reach the coast at Sarandë, a sunny seaside town. Spend the afternoon at the ancient city of Butrint, set among peaceful lagoons, then enjoy fresh seafood by the water at sunset.

Day 9: Ksamil and the Beaches

Give yourself a full beach day in Ksamil, famous for its little islands and clear, shallow water. Swim, sunbathe, take a small boat between the islets, and simply unwind.

Day 10: The Riviera and Llogara Pass

Drive the scenic coast road north through Himara and Dhërmi, two of the Riviera's loveliest spots, then climb the spectacular Llogara Pass on the way back toward Tirana or the airport, ending on a high.

Practical Tips

A rental car gives you the most freedom for a trip like this, with private transfers handy for the ferry legs and long drives. Pack layers for the mountains and swimwear for the coast, book the Theth to Valbona logistics ahead in peak summer, and carry some cash in Albanian lek for villages.

How fit do I need to be for the Theth to Valbona hike? It is a long but manageable day for anyone reasonably active. You can also skip it and take transport around the mountains.

When is the best time? June and September are ideal, warm on the coast and comfortable for hiking, while July and August are hotter and busier.
